The red silky oak, Alloxylon flammeum, also known as the northern tree waratah or Queensland waratah, is indeed closely related to the Sydney waratah. It is a large tree, growing to 35 metres tall on the Atherton Tableland. When in flower, the tree is a spectacular sight, attracting many birds and insects to its flowers with copious amounts of sweet, dripping nectar. The plant painted here is growing in the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney.
