The name onionwood refers to the appearance of this species’ timber. This is a listed rare species found in very wet, lowland rain-forest in north Queensland from Cape Tribulation south to Tully. The large, brightly coloured fruits are often seen along the tracks in the rainforests around Mission Beach. The 6 to 12m trees produce masses of these large, edible, red to crimson fruits, each containing a single seed. When ripe, the fruits fall to the ground where many get eaten (and dispersed) by cassowaries. It makes an attractive shade tree in gardens if the water is kept up to it.
