The red silky oak, also known as the northern tree waratah or Queensland waratah, is indeed closely related to the Sydney waratah. It is a large tree, growing to 35 metres tall on the Atherton Tableland. When in flower the tree is spectacular and attracts many birds and insects with copious amounts of sweet, dripping nectar. The plant painted here is growing in the Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney.
